STN_RC_v83_022221_CHRIS NOTES.00_05_02_1

A few years ago, my brother and I were driving along the Pennsylvania Turnpike. He said he had something he wanted to play for me, and all of a sudden I was hearing my grandfather's voice again. I hadn't heard it since he passed over ten years ago and I almost didn't recognize him at first.

My brother had digitized an old cassette tape of an interview with our grandfather, Robert Carson. I had always been proud of the fact that he had served in World War II, but he never told us much about his experience. We drove in silence as we listened to his journey from boot camp in Texas to the first three chaotic days on Omaha beach. He revealed, in stark detail, the trauma and death he experienced.

I had never fully appreciated the level of sacrifice and bravery my grandfather displayed until hearing the tape. If I could have, I would have driven straight to him to hug him and tell him how happy I am that he survived. But all I can do is share his story and give a voice not only to my grandfather, but to all the young men who fought alongside him.

ABOUT EDMUND CARSON

My name is Edmund Carson, grandson of Robert Carson. I’ve been living and working in New York City as a film editor the past ten years. I started out making a living editing corporate videos until I was able to make my part time passion of editing documentaries a full time career.

My past work includes: The Blech Effect, From Darkroom to Daylight and Visions of Mary Frank. Second to None is my directorial debut. I hope to continue making films and developing my career as a non-fiction editor. I find the best stories are the ones sitting right under our noses.
